About the SRT to VTT Converter

Most subtitle files are still created in SRT format by editing software, transcription tools and fansub workflows, but the web plays by different rules. Browsers and HTML5 players only read WebVTT, so an SRT file that works perfectly in a desktop player shows nothing on a website. This SRT to VTT converter bridges that gap: it rewrites your subtitles as a valid WebVTT file without touching a single timing or line of dialogue.

The conversion is a careful format translation, not a re-typing of your subtitles. Commas in timestamps become dots, the sequence numbers SRT needs are removed, SRT-only font markup is stripped, and the required WEBVTT header is added. Everything runs locally in your browser with JavaScript, so the file never leaves your device and the result is ready the moment you drop the file in.

Video creators use this converter when publishing to their own sites, online course platforms and Vimeo, and developers use it when building custom video players. If you are still writing or cleaning up the subtitle text itself, a word counter helps you keep caption lines to a readable length before you convert.

SRT to VTT Converter FAQs

SRT (SubRip) is the older subtitle format from desktop video players. Its timestamps use a comma, like 00:00:04,000. VTT (WebVTT) is the web standard format: timestamps use a dot, the file starts with a WEBVTT header, and it supports styling, positioning and metadata. HTML5 video players only accept WebVTT for subtitle tracks, which is why an SRT file often has to be converted before it works on a website.
