SQL Formatter

Format and beautify SQL queries for any databaseNobody writes their worst SQL by hand; the worst SQL comes from ORMs and reporting tools: one endless line, random capitalization, nested subqueries flattened into a ribbon. This formatter returns it as structured, indented, readable SQL.

About the SQL Formatter

A one-line SQL query with six joins is a debugging nightmare, and hand-indenting it wastes time. The SQL Formatter parses your query with a real SQL parser and rebuilds it with one clause per line, aligned subqueries and consistent indentation, for dialects from MySQL and PostgreSQL to BigQuery and Snowflake. You control the house style: keyword case, indent width, and target dialect. Everything runs locally in your browser, so it is safe for queries pulled straight out of production logs.

Where it helps most

Where reading formatted SQL matters.

Slow queries

A slow query becomes diagnosable once you can see the join order and where subqueries nest.

Migration reviews

A generated migration becomes reviewable before it ever touches production data.

Auditable WHERE

A WHERE clause with six conditions becomes auditable, each predicate on its own line where a wrong comparison cannot hide.

Shared queries

Pasted SQL that arrives formatted gets understood in one reading instead of three re-reads.

What it touches

Deliberately conservative.

Presentation only

It re-indents, re-cases keywords and breaks long lines, but never rewrites logic or renames anything.

No execution

Safe to run on any statement, including destructive ones: formatting is a text operation with no database connection.

Pair with EXPLAIN

Format the query, read it, then run EXPLAIN on the database to see the execution plan for the expensive parts.

SQL Formatter: private by design

A pure text operation in your browser: no database connection, nothing uploaded. No signup needed.

SQL Formatter FAQs

No. Formatting only changes whitespace, line breaks, and keyword capitalization. The logic, table names, conditions, and ordering stay byte-for-byte identical, so a formatted query returns exactly the same results as the original.
